I am Dr. Abdul Malek, first PhD student of Dr. Tiju Thomas. I would like to express my profound gratitude to Dr. Thomas for extending his kind support, encouragement and valuable comments throughout my doctoral research. He not only possesses a calm and balanced personality, but also is very friendly, highly enthusiastic and supportive. This helped me while going through an ocean full of ups and downs tides. I am fortunate to have got a chance to work under his treasured supervision. I believe, he sets the example of an ideal mentor. He has provided me the freedom to attempt the research problems in my way and has directed me to the right path on a timely manner.

The Ph.D. study has made me learn many essential aspects of life. These include how not to let failure stop me, how to face criticism and address questions with a smile on face, most importantly how to retain the hope after being a failure. He has contributed to the development of these skills, which I believe, will guide me throughout my life. His multitasking abilities provided a model for me to cope with new circumstances which required me to handle a load of works. I have also worked with him for two years after my PhD, and generated fruitful research publications and patent. I feel truly blessed to be connected with Dr. Tiju Thomas.

I completed my doctorate from IIT Madras as an interdisciplinary research scholar in 2022. I had the opportunity to work under the supervision of Dr. Tiju Thomas for my Ph.D. More than a supervisor, he has been a  "friend, philosopher, and guide".

From brainstorming sessions at the outset of a project to discussions of my results, he has always been there. His presence has been instrumental in guiding me through the ups and downs of Ph.D. life. His philosophy involves an emphasis on the art of collaboration, an analytic and pragmatic approach to problem identification, and a commitment to interdisciplinary research, all of which aided my development as a scholar and researcher.

There is significant independence available under Dr. Thomas' leadership, which has inspired me to nurture my own ideas all through. In this short space, I would not be able to describe all his contributions to my career development.

Dr. Thomas has taught me to go through life's ups and downs, while remaining humble even during occasions of success and emphasized the value of failings in research. I conclude by stating that he not only helped me to become a better researcher but aided my growth as a person.

I graduated from IIT Madras in 2020 with a bachelors in metallurgical and materials engineering and an integrated masters in nanotechnology. I am currently in my first year at Stanford University where I am pursuing a PhD in materials science where I am studying battery materials to design cheap, high-energy cathodes for lithium ion batteries using iron-redox.

I had took ID6050 - Chemical Physics of Modern Technical Ceramics with Prof. Tiju Thomas in my eighth semester (January - May 2019) and the course was one of the most conceptually-dense and indispensable courses from my time in IITM. It continues to serve me well, in my research till this day.
