Video games have been part of my interests because they offer something that few other forms of entertainment can replicate.
They don't simply allow you to watch a world.
They allow you to interact with it.
You make decisions.
You take risks.
You solve problems.
You compete.
You fail.
You adapt.
And then you try again.
What might look like simple entertainment from the outside can actually involve a surprising amount of strategy, creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and decision-making.
A video game gives you a world of rules and asks you: "What can you do with them?"
When I play a video game, I'm not simply following instructions.
I'm constantly trying to understand the environment.
What are my objectives?
What resources do I have?
What are my limitations?
What can my opponents do?
What strategies are available?
What happens if I take a particular action?
This turns gaming into a continuous process of problem-solving.
Every challenge becomes a question.
Every obstacle becomes a problem.
Every failure becomes feedback.
And every new level introduces something I haven't encountered before.
One of the biggest reasons I enjoy video games is strategy.
Different games require different types of thinking.
Some reward:
Long-term planning
Resource management
Tactical positioning
Pattern recognition
Decision-making
Risk assessment
Team coordination
Adaptability
Sometimes the strongest move isn't the most obvious one.
You might need to sacrifice something now to gain an advantage later.
You might need to conserve resources.
You might need to wait for the right opportunity.
You might need to change your strategy entirely.
That makes gaming a constant exercise in decision-making under constraints.
Most games give you an objective.
Win the match.
Complete the mission.
Defeat an opponent.
Solve the puzzle.
Build an empire.
Escape the situation.
Reach the next level.
The objective provides direction.
But there are often multiple ways to achieve it.
That is what I find interesting.
The game gives you the destination.
You have to figure out the route.
Some of my favourite gaming experiences come from exploration.
Instead of being told exactly what to do, you are given a world and allowed to investigate it.
You discover:
Hidden areas
Secret items
Environmental details
New characters
Unexpected events
Alternative paths
Stories hidden within the world
Exploration rewards curiosity.
It encourages you to ask:
"What's over there?"
Sometimes that curiosity leads to something valuable.
Sometimes it leads directly into something that wants to kill you. đ
Either way, you discovered something.
Competitive games introduce another layer.
Now you're not simply fighting against the game's system.
You're fighting against another person.
That changes everything.
A predictable strategy becomes exploitable.
Your opponent learns.
You learn.
They adapt.
You adapt again.
The game becomes a cycle:
Action â Reaction â Counteraction â Adaptation
This is where competition becomes intellectually interesting.
You aren't just trying to execute your strategy.
You're trying to outthink someone else's strategy.
Video games can teach composure in surprisingly intense situations.
You're one decision away from winning.
Your opponent is applying pressure.
The timer is running.
Your resources are low.
Your team is relying on you.
You make a mistake.
The temptation is to panic.
But panic usually creates more mistakes.
You have to reset.
Look at the situation.
Identify what you still control.
Then make the next decision.
Don't let one mistake become five.
That principle applies far beyond gaming.
Video games make failure extremely visible.
You die.
You lose.
You miss the objective.
You get eliminated.
You fail the mission.
Then the game gives you another opportunity.
Try again.
That creates a useful relationship with failure.
Instead of:
"I failed, therefore I'm bad."
you can think:
"I failed. What caused it?"
Maybe your timing was wrong.
Maybe you misunderstood the mechanic.
Maybe you took too much risk.
Maybe you weren't prepared.
Maybe you simply needed more practice.
Failure becomes information.
Gaming has a powerful learning cycle:
Try something.
Something goes wrong.
Figure out why.
Change your approach.
Try again.
Eventually, the challenge becomes manageable.

This is one of the clearest examples of deliberate learning.
Another thing I enjoy is the feeling of progression.
At the beginning, something might feel impossible.
You don't understand the mechanics.
Your reactions are slow.
Your strategy is inefficient.
Then you practise.
Gradually:
You get better.
Your movements become more natural.
Your decisions become faster.
Your understanding becomes deeper.
Eventually, something that once seemed difficult becomes almost automatic.
That's satisfying because you're not simply gaining an in-game reward.
You're experiencing your own improvement.
Every game has its own language.
You need to learn:
Rules
Mechanics
Systems
Controls
Resources
Character abilities
Enemy behaviours
Maps
Objectives
Once you understand the system, you can start finding ways to use it creatively.
And that's where gaming gets really interesting.
First you learn the rules. Then you learn how to exploit the possibilities within them.
Video games aren't always about following the intended path.
Sometimes you can find your own solution.
You might approach an enemy differently.
Use an unexpected strategy.
Combine abilities.
Manipulate the environment.
Build something unusual.
Find a shortcut.
Experiment with mechanics.
That freedom encourages creative thinking.
The game gives you a toolbox.
You decide what to build with it.
Multiplayer games taught me another important skill:
You cannot always win alone.
A team needs communication.
Players have different roles.
One person might attack.
Another might defend.
Another might provide support.
Another might gather information.
Another might coordinate the strategy.
The strongest individual player isn't necessarily the most valuable player.
Sometimes the best player is the one who makes everyone else better.
That requires:
Communication
Trust
Coordination
Awareness
Leadership
Adaptability
Team-based games also teach concise communication.
You don't always have time to explain an entire essay.
Sometimes you need to communicate:
What happened.
Where it happened.
What you need.
What we're doing next.
That teaches the value of clear information delivered quickly.
In high-pressure situations, communication needs to be:
Short. Clear. Useful.
Some of the best memories from gaming aren't necessarily about winning.
They're about the people you played with.
Late-night sessions.
Laughing at ridiculous situations.
Celebrating a clutch victory.
Getting destroyed together.
Arguing about who made the mistake.
Trying one more match even though everyone said they were going to sleep.
Gaming creates shared experiences.
And those experiences can strengthen friendships.
Online gaming can also expose you to people you would never normally meet.
Different backgrounds.
Different countries.
Different personalities.
Different ways of thinking.
You learn how people communicate and cooperate despite not necessarily knowing anything about each other's lives outside the game.
A game becomes a small social environment.
Video games can also be powerful storytelling mediums.
Unlike movies, games often allow you to participate in the story.
You don't simply watch a character make a decision.
Sometimes you make it yourself.
That creates a different emotional connection.
You're not only observing the journey.
You're experiencing it through interaction.
This made me appreciate storytelling in a different way.
Games can create entire worlds.
Fictional cities.
Historical environments.
Fantasy kingdoms.
Futuristic societies.
Alien planets.
Post-apocalyptic landscapes.
You can explore places that don't physically exist.
That stimulates imagination.
It allows you to temporarily step outside your normal environment and experience something completely different.
One thing I find fascinating is how different genres encourage different mental skills.
Planning, resource management and long-term thinking.
Reaction time, positioning, teamwork and tactical decision-making.
Logic, pattern recognition and problem-solving.
Timing, precision and risk management.
Creativity, planning and systems thinking.
Exploration, resource management, decision-making and storytelling.
Risk assessment, preparation and resource conservation.
Every genre creates a different mental environment.
Games constantly ask you:
"How much are you willing to risk?"
Do you take the difficult route for a greater reward?
Do you fight the stronger enemy?
Do you spend your resources now?
Do you save them for later?
Do you explore the dangerous area?
Do you play conservatively?
Risk becomes a strategic variable.
And that's something I find especially interesting.
The objective isn't to eliminate risk. It's to understand when risk is worth taking.
Perhaps the most important gaming skill is adaptability.
You can enter a game with a perfect strategy.
Then something unexpected happens.
Your opponent changes tactics.
A mechanic changes.
Your resources disappear.
Your teammate makes a mistake.
The environment changes.
Your original plan becomes useless.
You have to adapt.
This is where I learned:
A strong player doesn't just have a good plan. A strong player knows when to abandon it.
The deeper I get into games, the more I start seeing them as interconnected systems.
Your actions affect:
Resources â Position â Options â Risk â Future Decisions
One decision can create several consequences.
This encourages systems thinking.
Instead of asking:
"Is this move good?"
you begin asking:
"What does this move cause?"
That's a much deeper question.
I don't believe video games automatically make someone better at life.
But the thinking habits developed through certain games can be valuable when consciously applied elsewhere.
Gaming can teach you to:
Break problems into smaller pieces.
Experiment.
Learn from failure.
Think strategically.
Manage limited resources.
Communicate with others.
Take calculated risks.
Adapt to changing situations.
Stay calm under pressure.
Keep trying after failure.
The important part is transferring those lessons beyond the screen.
Otherwise, you've only mastered the game.
If I had to reduce what I enjoy about video games into a framework:
Understand the environment.
Identify the problem and available options.
Choose a direction.
Take action.
Respond to what actually happens.
Study the result and improve.
Observe â Analyse â Strategise â Execute â Adapt â Learn.
There's also an interesting transition that can happen.
You start as someone who plays games.
Eventually, you may become curious about how they're made.
Why does this mechanic work?
How was this animation created?
How does the AI behave?
How was the world designed?
How does multiplayer work?
How was the soundtrack produced?
That curiosity can lead into:
Game development
Animation
Programming
Storytelling
3D modelling
Sound design
Art
Game design
The player begins looking behind the curtain.
And suddenly the game becomes a creative and technical system rather than simply entertainment.
Ultimately, video games are interesting to me because they combine so many things I enjoy:
Strategy.
Competition.
Creativity.
Problem-solving.
Exploration.
Risk.
Technology.
Storytelling.
Teamwork.
Adaptation.
Every game gives you a world with rules.
You don't control all of the circumstances.
You don't control what your opponents do.
You don't control every outcome.
But you control your decisions.
And that's where the real game begins.
Learn the rules.
Understand the system.
Make your move.
Learn from failure.
Adapt to the unexpected.
Keep progressing.
Because the most interesting part of gaming isn't simply reaching the end.
It's seeing how much better you can become before you get there.
