¡Bienvenidos! Welcome to UVA, new Incoming and Transfer Students!
The Latinx Handbook is a collaboration project between various members of the Latinx community inspired by the reflection of the needs of the Latinx student population at this University. Our purpose is to strengthen the Latinx community at the University of Virginia by easing the transition of incoming Latinx/Hispanic first year and transfer students. Our efforts include introducing them to the Latinx community and passing down knowledge and resources to promote a successful first year at UVA.
In 2017, “Hispanic American” students at UVa made up 6.54% of the total student population according to the UVA Diversity Dashboard. This percentage is an accumulation of steady growth over the years. Since 2012, first year minority student enrollment has increased by 38% and first-generation student enrollment is up by 42%. Efforts like the Multicultural Student Services peer mentoring program, cultural organizations, advocacy organizations, and leadership/career-based organizations have helped to create a supporting environment for Latinx students. However, with a relatively low percentage of Latinx students on Grounds, it is clear that there is a lot of room for improvement to enhance the Latinx experience. Helping support all Latinx students - first-generation, low-income, undocumented, international, and transfer students - is integral in this process. We hope this handbook is the first step to your success here at UVA.
Welcome to the family!
