MySpace was a social networking platform that allowed users to create web profiles that highlighted their interests and hobbies and connected them with users all over the world. The web profiles were customized to individual users, allowing each to post personal information, interests, hobbies, favorite music and so much more. A unique feature highlighted on the website was the “Top 8” where users can publicly list their top 8 friends on the site for everyone to see. Even outside of this top 8, users were able to invite or add friends on the site and network, this space was called the Friend Space. “You [could] request to add anyone to your Friend Space, and if your invitation is accepted, you can send that person email, instant messages, links to a band you discovered in MySpace Music, and anything else you might share with your friends” (source). MySpace began as a networking site for music lovers, allowing them to listen to their favorite music and connect with other people with similar interests. It quickly grew in popularity, with its user base reaching 100 million users by 2006 and becoming one of the most visited websites in the world. MySpace leveraged its expansive reach to become an advertising powerhouse, with its estimated ad revenue reaching $900 million in 2008.
