Dr. Caird Rexroad’s 30-year agricultural research career has yielded accomplishments from personal research towards genome-enabled genetic improvement strategies, laboratory management of fiscal, physical and human resources, and science leadership that supports science-based, sustainable use of our natural resources to meet the nutritional demands of a growing global population. He currently serves as the USDA ARS National Program Leader for Aquaculture, whose mission is to is to conduct research and deliver technologies that improve domestic aquaculture production efficiency and product quality while minimizing impacts on natural resources. The portfolio includes multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator projects that cover freshwater and marine research conducted at laboratory sites across the nation; primary species of interest include catfish and their hybrids, striped bass and their hybrids, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, shrimp, pompano, red drum, tilapia, Pacific and eastern oysters. National program scientists use state of the art approaches in genetics, genomics, physiology, nutrition, fish health, product quality and aquatic engineering to improve genetic stocks and develop scientific information and management practices that ensure a high quality, safe supply of healthful seafood and aquatic products. Dr. Rexroad’s role is to bring internal and external coordination, communication, and empowerment to the program, set research program direction, serve as a technical expert to the Department, Administration and Congress, and ensure the relevance, impact and quality of ARS aquaculture research.
