Don't forget to renew your ASA Membership and check the box for the Teaching & Learning Section

The 116th ASA Annual Meeting, “Emancipatory Sociology: Rising to the Du Boisian Challenge” will be held August 7-10, 2021 virtually. The Annual Meeting provides the opportunity for professionals involved in the scientific study of society to share knowledge and new directions in research and practice. Approximately 600 program sessions are convened during the four-day meeting held every August to provide participation venues and networking outlets for nearly 3,000 research papers and over 4,600 presenters.

UPDATE 11/18/20 from ASA ED Nancy Kidd:

"Due to COVID-19, the 2021 ASA Annual Meeting in Chicago has been cancelled. It is now clear that the global health crisis will not be resolved by August, and a large gathering of people from around the world presents an untenable health risk.

We are pleased to offer a virtual 2021 ASA Annual Meeting instead of the in-person event, and we will share further information about the virtual meeting as we work out details in the coming months. We look forward to hosting a robust and exciting virtual meeting based on President Aldon Morris’ theme 'Emancipatory Sociology: Rising to the Du Boisian Challenge.'"

The ASA online portal is open for submissions.

About

The Carla B. Howery Teaching Enhancement Fund provides small grants to support projects that advance the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) within the discipline of sociology. The Carnegie Foundation has defined SoTL as “problem posing about an issue of teaching or learning, study of the problem through methods appropriate to the disciplinary epistemologies, applications of results to practice, communication of results, self-reflection, and peer review” (Cambridge, 2001).

Award

Howery teaching grants can support an individual, a program, a department, or a committee of a state/regional association. ASA may award multiple grants, each up to $2,500. Funds can be used for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to: summer salary, equipment, software, travel, meetings, transcription of interviews and survey implementation. Principal criteria for the award are: the project advances the teaching and learning of sociology, serves as a seed project that will continue to have an impact over time, and will be systemic in its impact. The criteria are intentionally flexible in order to accommodate innovative proposals.
