New fire responders looking to get initial fire fighter training for the first time will need to complete Fire School. These positions typically include Fire fighter type 2 (FFT2), Resource Advisor Fireline (REAF), and Agency Administrators. This Fire School is for Medford District BLM and Rogue River-Siskiyou NF personnel. A blended training approach will be utilized with online training and a required S-130 field day. Course descriptions and links to the online content can be found in the sections below.

IS-700.b Introduction to the National Incident Management System
This course provides an overview of the National Incident Management System (NIMS). The National Incident Management System defines the comprehensive approach guiding the whole community - all levels of government, nongovernmental organizations (NGO), and the private sector - to work together seamlessly to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from the effects of incidents. The course provides learners with a basic understanding of NIMS concepts, principles, and components.

IS-100.c Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS-100)
ICS 100, Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS). The target audience includes persons involved with emergency planning, and response or recovery efforts.

L-180 Human Factors in The Wildland Fire Service
The L-180, Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service, online course exposes students to human performance concepts as part of basic wildland firefighter training. The course is specifically designed for entry-level operational personnel; however, this course also applies to all wildland fire service personnel, including non-operational personnel.
At the end of the online course, students will be able to practice decision-making skills in an interactive simulation as a member of a fire crew, and students will apply their Human Factors knowledge to a variety of scenarios. Throughout the simulation, students will answer questions and make decisions regarding situation awareness and hazard identification, decision-making, and team cohesion. Responses are tracked, and then reported at the end of the activity. (2-3 hrs estimated for completion)

S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
This course introduces students to the basic concepts of wildland fire behavior, including:
The primary wildland fire environment components: fuels, weather, and topography;
How characteristics and interactions of fuels, weather, and topography affect fire behavior;
How fire behavior affects risk to firefighters.
6-8 hrs estimated for completion. Course contains knowledge checks and required final exam.

S-130 Firefighter Training
The intent of this course is to train new firefighters in basic Firefighting skills. The course addresses the foundational skills universal to all wildland firefighters. The material is divided into 12 online modules (1 to 3 hours each) and a mandatory, instructor-led field exercise.
Upon completion of the online component and the mandatory Fire Exercise Day, the student will be able to:
Describe the purpose of the Standard Firefighting Orders and Watch Out Situations.
Describe what the Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones (LCES) system is and how it relates to the Standard Firefighting Orders.
Describe the various communication methods and tools used for collecting, producing, and distributing information.
Describe the standards, tools and equipment, and various methods used in fireline construction.
Describe the methods for extinguishing a fire with or without the use of water.
Demonstrate the ability to construct fireline to required standards using various methods, tools and equipment, and techniques.

Field Day Requirement. As stated in the description above a field day is required for full completion of the S-130 course.
There will be a joint BLM/FS field day scheduled. See below for those details and sign-up form.
Individual Units (district) may also host localized S-130 field days as needed (not guaranteed). Please communicate to your fire shop through your supervisor that you will need a field day if unable to attend the joint session.
Note: Upon successful completion of the field day exercise, the lead instructor will issue the student a S-130, Firefighter Training Field Day certificate of completion.

Travel to and from the Field Day. Initial meetup will be MIO, with travel to the Field Day site (estimated to be near Provolt (30 min from MIO). Work with your supervisor for GOV vehicle, drivers, etc. We will share info on more specifics and help with carpooling closer to the day.
