The Lion Monument is a powerful and emotional sculpture carved into a sandstone rock face in 1821, made to honour the Swiss guards who were killed in 1792. It was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and features a dying lion lying peacefully in the shade of a park, with its paw resting on a broken shield. This represents the bravery of the soldiers who gave their lives for the country, and the sorrow of those who lost their fathers, husbands, and friends.
This monument is free to visit and open to the public all year round. It is just a short walk away from the old town, and is surrounded by a small, peaceful park that you can stroll in after taking a look at the iconic Lion.
From the hotel, the Lion Monument is 8 minutes by train, which is faster than taking a car! First, walk for 170 meters to Schwanenplatz and take the Friedental for 3 stops until you reach Wesemlinrain. From there, it's a 2 minute walk to the Lion Monument!
