Chapel Bridge is one of Switzerland's most iconic landmarks, built in the 14th century. It's the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe, and stretches along from the New Town on the southern bank of the Reuss to the Rathausquai in the medieval Old Town. Inside the bridge, you will find beautiful paintings depicting the history of Lucerne. Unfortunately, a major part of the bridge caught fire in 1993, and only the water tower and the two bridgeheads could be saved. The bridge was rebuilt in just 8 months, reopening in April 1994.
Visiting the bridge is completely free! Walking across the bridge at any time offers you beautiful views of the river, the old town, and even the Alps in the distance. This is one of the most photographed locations in Switzerland, so make sure to get yourself a picture here!
Our recommended hotel, Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern, is extremely close to the famous Chapel Bridge and is just a quick 4-minute walk to it. From the hotel, Head southwest toward Hertensteinstrasse for 35m. Turn left onto Hertensteinstrasse, then right onto Schweizerhofquai after 14m. Continue to follow Route 2, then turn right onto Rathausquai after 180m. Finally, turn left onto Kapellbrücke.
