The Mount Jackson Fins Swim Team got started in the summer of 2000. Laurie Koontz, BJ Goodier, Rod Shepherd, and Head Coach Cindy Scott were drafted by President Steve Shaffer to get the team up and running. In early 2000 Steve was talking to Rod about the ‘to be’ Mount Jackson Swim Team. “ I am going to name them the Mount Jackson Fish.” Steve said. “FINS.” Rod corrected. “If you doubt that name go ask some middle schoolers which team they would rather swim for, the ‘Fish’ or the ‘Fins’. Steve called Rod a couple of days later and said the fifth and final team in Shenandoah County would be known as the Mount Jackson Fins Swim Team.
So the Fins had nothing in the spring of 2000. Laurie, BJ, and Rod drafted a one time letter to some prominent Mount Jackson citizens asking for a one time donation to help get the team started. The Town of Mount Jackson agreed to match those donations dollar for dollar. Laurie, BJ, and Rod were able to successfully raise over $1,800.00 in about two weeks. The Mount Jackson Museum has a framed photo of the pool and the thank you photo sent out by the team that summer.
Today, the summer of 2022 starts The Mount Jackson Fins Swim Team's twenty third season of competitive swimming at the Mount Jackson Community Pool! The goal of the Mount Jackson Fins Swim Team is for swimmers to improve their swimming skills and have FUN! This program provides competitive swimming instruction, practice, and competition events for swimmers ages 4 to 18. The Mount Jackson Fins Swim Team is the only local, individually based fitness sport that allows children to learn, train, and compete against other children their age with the support of team members as they cheer each other on. The Mount Jackson Fins Swim Team feels as though this positive environment allows for the development of a child’s healthy self-esteem and self-image.
Swimmers on the Mount Jackson Fins Swim Team have continued to improve with each season! Thanks to the dedication of parents, they have arrived at the exciting twenty-third year. For 2022 the Mount Jackson Fins Swim Team is looking for more swimmers to jump in, learn the strokes, win more ribbons, and most importantly, have FUN!
