With the lack of a swim team in Page County, local youth have been forced to travel to Shenandoah County to participate in the swim league there. In 2012, the New Market Lightning — the closest team in the Shenandoah County Swim League — had two swimmers on its roster from Page County. The following year it was four. By 2019, the number had grown to 32.
At a Stanley Council meeting held on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, following a brief, but enthusiastic discussion about the prospect of bringing in more swimmers to the Hawksbill Pool and more visitors to the Town of Stanley, the council unanimously gave a vote of support for the formation of the Stanley Stingrays Swim Team for the summer 2020 swim season. With the lack of a swim team in Page County and due to the increasing interest in the sport, Page County is now planning to form its very own program.
The summer of 2022 starts our second season of competitive swimming at the Hawkbill Pool! The goal of the Stanley Stingrays Swim Team is for the swimmers to improve their swimming skills and have FUN! Our program provides competitive swimming instruction, practice, and competition events. Swimming is the only local, individually based fitness sport that allows children to learn, train, and compete against other children their age with the support of team members as they cheer each other on. We feel as though this positive environment allows for the development of a child’s healthy self-esteem and self-image.
Our swimmers will continue to improve with each season! Thanks to the dedication of parents, we have arrived at the exciting second year. For 2022 we are looking for swimmers to jump in, learn the strokes, win ribbons, and most importantly, have FUN!
