Mission Statement
"Not in the habit of handing out badges. Earn it and honor it."
Commander Henry Cox
FTEP Director
The SMPD F.T.E.P is a training and development program designed for newly hired police officers. This program is designed to provide new officers of the Sussex Police Department with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to succeed as law enforcement professionals.
The goal is to have officers have an understanding of not only basic law enforcement, but an understanding on how to perform their duties as an officer of the SMPD. They will learn the inner workings of the department, and how our officers represent the department.
After an officer receives their classroom training from the Office of Field Training, they move to the 2 phases of the FTEP program.
Phase I - Ride Along
In the ride along phase, you will learn all there is to know about being a Sussex Metropolitan Police Officer. While on this ride along, your instructor will also be assessing you to assure you have retained your CLEO training. During this time, you will be introduced to department forms and documents and expected to complete them.
Phase II - Probationary Period
In this phase, you will be allowed to patrol on your own. You will adhere to all standards as if you were the rank of Police Officer. During this time, Supervisors and Instructors will give special attention to your field performance and reports.
