The Police Chief is the overall head of the department. He/She represents the department publicly and Serves as the representative for the needs of the department. They also oversee:
All Department Bureaus
Field Operations Bureaus
Administrative Bureaus
Investigative Bureaus
The Assistant Chief is the second in command of the Police Department. They are an advisor for the police chief, and help to make important department decisions. Other Duties Include:
Supervising all divisions, executive, and command staff
Managing the Administrative Bureau, and all divisions under the Bureau
Receiving reports by the Deputy Chiefs
The Deputy Chiefs are the third and fourth in command of the Department. Deputy Chiefs of Police shall be responsible for:
Overall supervision and leadership of the Special Operations Bureau, Field Operations Bureau, and the Administrative Services Bureau
Taking reports for administration.
The Patrol Commander Supervises the Field Operations Bureau, and its 5 Districts. They review all patrol reports from patrol officers and report directly to the Patrol Chief.
The Detective Captain is the second in command of the Bureau. They take a more direct involvement in the work of the Detectives. They are responsible for making sure that detectives finish cases, and oversee and approve them before they are handed over to legal authority.
The Special Operations Captain is the second in command of the Special Operations Bureau. They are responsible for making sure that officers submit their appropriate paper work and ensure they handle every situation to the best of their ability.
Patrol Lieutenants are in charge of officer units within the SMPD and as such is in charge of the field officers, and other operations within their unit. They review reports from the patrol officers and pass them to the patrol captains.
Detective Lieutenants oversee all 3 divisions of the SMPD Investigative Bureau. They are able to sign off on all investigations made by Detectives, and review them before the case is given to other legal authority.
Patrol Sergeants are our on the ground overseers of Department officers. They supervise and guide officers in the performance of their duties. In adition, they are the primary enforcers of policy and standards for patrol officers.
Detective Sergeants oversee special divisions within the Investigations Bureau. They are responsible for supervising detectives and their respective cases.
