The purpose of the Sussex Police ESU team is to provide specialized response units to the city and county of Sussex. The ESU team includes a Special Weapons and Tactics divisions, and a Bomb Squad Unit. These teams all provide specialized services pertaining to their division name.
The ESU team is run jointly between the Sussex Police Department, and the Sussex County Sheriffs Office
Mission
To handle high risk operations in a manner that reduces the chance of violence injury or death. To neutralize or mitigate extreme events; from creating a safe area for negotiations to be effective, or as a last option neutralizing armed threats with special weaponry and tactics.
Goals
To provide the citizens of Sussex County with a trained response team to high risk situations:
Deploy officers who are trained in special weapons and tactics
Lessen the chance of violence, injury, or death in dealing with high risk situations
Assist other law enforcement agencies as requested
Mission
The Bomb Squad utilizes specialized equipment to approach, inspect, disarm and/or remove all types of explosive devices. Bomb Squad members are adept at examining explosive devices in order to identify persons responsible for the devices’ manufacture. Follow-up investigations are an integral part of the Bomb Squad function.
