For those who consumed cannabis before legalization- do you remember that bubbling excitement of smelling weed when you turned a corner, or meeting someone new who was open and honest about their consumption? It felt like this instant connection; an understanding and bond that solidified a budding relationship or conversation- breathing room to talk freely about an otherwise hushed substance. It was electric. And now ask yourself, since legalization, has that bond deepened? Have we embedded and taught those new to cannabis what the embrace of this community can really achieve?
With legalization in any medium you can often see a white line drawn in the sand, separating corporate and culture. Divisions within the cannabis community- from black market to consumers to retailers to producers- have created a pathway for meaningful engagement and easier connection, but it’s also brought friction, and sparked questions of authenticity. And yes, there are questions that must be addressed, and heavy conversations that can’t be swept under the rug, but there’s also an industry- a safe space- that needs nurturing.
Throughout the years cannabis has been a discovery experience for so many people; whether it’s used therapeutically or recreationally- it’s meant to bring us closer together. Friends Who Weed fights to blend all of these elements at once- to keep the original message and ties of culture and community within the rapidly expanding world of cannabis; to celebrate what it means to have a tribe that you can lean on, while giving back to the world around us, and impart change onto ideals that are often reflected and reciprocated within our culture. As FWW grows we hope to support a multitude of campaigns that seek to fill holes where necessary. A collaborative business, we want to hear from those around us- basically, what changes do you want to see fixed or mended, and how can we help?
A one-woman-show, and the Founder of Friends Who Weed, Emily Riehl has been a long time stoner, facing the brunt of the many stereotypes and backlash that we still fight off today. An outspoken advocate, and a mom open to the world about her experience with cannabis, she took a chance and dropped everything to support a piece of history she unequivocally backed. Unsure of her place within the industry yet, all she knew was that she had to be hands on and support a movement that had been an intrinsic part of her well being for so long. Working her way up from cannabis retail, to becoming a sales rep for a producer, and now a National Sales Manager, Emily understands what building connections within, and outside, of this community means. She’s found cracks in the foundation, and understands where she fits and the purpose for her leap of faith four years ago- to bridge the gap between corporate and culture, and to move the philosophies of the plant forward while raising money and support for causes that unite and impact those that need it the most. By collaborating with smaller businesses, creators and designers, Emily fosters these goals through her newly blossomed company.
Friends Who Weed’s first campaign, Hats For High Hopes, seemed an obvious choice- to support those who still hold a criminal record for consumption pre-legalization. Amnesty. Despite legalization, there are still over half a million Canadians suffering from previous cannabis criminal records. Why should those who fought for the freedoms we have today be persecuted and left behind? Through Cannabis Amnesty, an organization created in 2018 that has helped fight for expedited pardons on a legislative level with a focus on the unjust actions held against Black and Indigenous consumers during cannabis prohibition, Friends Who Weed is able to help sponsor pardons by selling hats and donating 30% of its revenue to Cannabis Amnesty. In the coming year expect to see new drops and exciting product launches set to support different charities and organizations in Canada through FWW.
