When I rolled up to what could be any grain farm in Vulcan County, Alberta, I wasn’t expecting to have my mind blown. But that’s what Serena Donovan did on Canada Day 2022.
I stepped out of my truck outside of the Because You Cann cannabis growing facility and was pleasantly greeted by the faintest aroma of cannabis coming from the non-descript farm building. I sent Serena a text, “I think I’m here”.
A few seconds later there was a beep, a hiss and a vacuum-sealed door around the corner opened. A smiling face popped out and there she was, Serena Donovan. Serena is the owner and operator of Because You Cann grow facility, Because You Cann Cannabis Co. cannabis dispensary and MaryJane Manor in Vulcan County, in the tiny hamlet of Mossleigh, Alberta, Canada (approx. 1 hr south of Calgary).
Serena grew up on Vancouver Island, in a very conservative home that considered cannabis to be a “drug”. It wasn’t until much later in life that Serena considered using cannabis as a medicine. She was working as a Vulcan County Councilor and suffering with chronic migraines when a particularly bad migraine struck. Serena had experienced a 7 day long migraine and was at her wits end when she went to see her family doctor. But her doctor didn’t seem to understand the immense pain and suffering she was going through. Her doctor wrote her a prescription for an antidepressant. Serena was so shocked and offended that she ripped it up in the exam room and decided she was taking her health into her own hands.
She started to research cannabis products & CBD oils, got herself a prescription through a medical cannabis clinic and began treatment. However she still felt she had to hide it. She explained that she would be in the bathroom to discreetly dose her oils and still felt a great deal of shame. There was still a huge stigma to be using medical cannabis, especially as a County Councilor. And the dosing through the syringes was not as discreet as a pill, which would be more socially acceptable. Plus the oils could be hard on the tummy. Serena ultimately came up with the idea of decarbing CBD flower and making her own capsules to get her medication. And this is how she continues to use CBD today. Since beginning treatment Serena’s migraines have gone from chronic to sporadic!
In order to enter the grow I had to don full PPE. We’re talking puffy marshmallow suits with booties, hair coverings, masks and gloves! But in order to prevent contaminants from entering the grow this is the precautions that must be taken to protect the precious plants. Feeling a bit like the Michelin Man, I waited with baited breath (fogging up my glasses behind my mask) for the airlock door to hiss open from the staff room/lobby and into the grow. Even behind that mask, I could smell the delicious scent of Because You Cann’s landmark strain- Blue Glue Kush. “We’ve just harvested”, says Serena. Meanwhile I’m weak in the knees and my eyes are rolling back in my head cause it smells so good in the place. That was only the beginning…
Serena is dedicated to producing clean cannabis, she believes that her products should never have to be irradiated. She has decided that if she will not consume the product she will not sell it.
Did you know that most of the cannabis produced legally in Canada is zapped by gamma rays? According to Leafly around 80% of Canada’s Licensed Producers use irradiation on their product. Irradiation is used to either prevent mold, bacteria and yeast from growing, or to kill it if it’s already present. That’s right. The weed in your pipe could have had mold in it. If microbial testing finds any mold etc. present, the cannabis can then be irradiated to save the harvest and make it sellable. Some producers simply irradiate everything. At Because You Cann they believe in doing it right the first time and have never failed a microbial test!
Because of this, Serena has implemented extensive sanitation protocols (hand washing, device cleaning and facility cleaning), employee PPE policies, environmental controls and monitoring, extensive employee checklists and is also trucking water for the facility in from High River- a community over 50kms away. However, this is municipal treated water and much higher quality for growing clean cannabis.
After stepping onto the floor and learning about irradiation, microbial tests and water I was whisked off to the growing ‘pods’, where the scent of Blue Glue Kush (BGK) intensified. The current crop was just finishing week two of flower. Serena was explaining to me that at the present time they were experimenting with topping and not topping the BGK to see how this would affect overall yield.
Topping is a high-stress plant training method that involves removing the tip of the plant’s upper growth. This allows the plant to grow multiple tops rather than just one. More top colas means a bigger yield off each plant.
Next we moved onto the drying room- and let me tell you… the smell in there!!! Now THAT is what heaven smells like my friends!!!! Wow! I wish I could digitally bottle the smell and have you click here for a fun little whiff of what it smelled like! And for me - having only ever harvested and grown my own cannabis- this was more drying flower than I had seen at this point. I was in shock, I was literally dumbfounded.
And then Serena took me to check out the storage and processing area. She showed me her pride and joy: Blue Glue Kush. It was curing and waiting to be packaged and sold to happy customers like you and I! Those blueberry terps smacked me in the face when the curing containers were cranked open.
When I stepped into MaryJane Manor I was greeted by the familiar scent of cannabis- the faintest hint of a smoke session gone by. I could imagine if I had traveled a long way to get there and was waiting for a toke this would be a very welcoming aroma. Especially because you can light up the moment you walk through the front door.
This cannabis friendly educational retreat center offers 15 terpene-themed rooms, two kitchen spaces, outdoor patios and Canada’s first legal cannabis lounge! The entire property - inside and out is cannabis friendly.
Each room (not quite finished at time of writing) is tastefully appointed, configured a bit uniquely and themed as a different terpene and colour. And the bathrooms have the dopest shower curtains ever!!
The Green Haven Lounge makes you want to sink into the velvety couches with a fat joint and never return. I can tell that in the hazy, funky lighting many ideas and laughs will be shared.
This was an incredible experience for me to meet Serena, see her amazing businesses and get to know a fellow Woman of Weed!
