FoS student wellbeing hub

There are several student-led community groups within the Department of Psychology at the University of York. Collectively, we aim to make students from all groups feel more welcome. Each community group has its own focus, but with the common goal of helping students get the most out of university, and make actual change. Read more about us below.

As a committee, our main goal is to increase the sense of belonging of all students within the Department of Psychology. We have three guiding principles that focus the work we do: environment, teaching, and research.

For Environment, we want to create safe spaces for everyone, and so we want to prioritise more diverse student and staff populations. Similarly, we want to encourage solidarity and establish safe spaces within the department, through programmes like Union Black, the BCC, ICC and PDC. We also want students to achieve their greatest potential, and give them tools to look after their wellbeing, which is covered by RWB.

For Teaching, we hope to decolonise the curriculum and pinpoint diverse research studies. For example, we want to encourage lecturers to highlight the issues associated with generalisations from WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic) populations, as well as discuss ethical issues related to psychological research. This will culminate in an EDI module, which we are currently developing - a specific remit of the DDC.

For Research, we want to support more inclusive research practices, with diversity in both participant samples and researchers. Furthermore, we want to encourage and highlight active ongoing EDI research. Finally, our efforts are focused towards creating an EDI research centre.
