BAME Chill Corner

Who are we:

The BCC provides a safe space for students of colour to come together and chill out.  We provide a relaxing space for people from diverse backgrounds to come and unwind.

We believe the BCC is important as it is an inclusive place where everybody is welcome to be themselves and engage in cultural conversation whilst sharing a sense of belonging. We help promote understanding, positive wellbeing and a supportive atmosphere whilst creating a space where people can relax and have some fun.

We organise chill events, conversational afternoons, mentorship programmes and much more. Come join us for some good vibes and some great company.

Some Poetic Inspiration

"Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou is a wonderful poem which celebrates the message of strength and the rise above adversity.  Maya Angelou's poems never fail to leave us deep in thought, her powerful writing and immense contribution to literature and civil rights makes her such an important figure. Her writings like 'Still I Rise' and ' I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' have empowered people all over the world, our departmental community coordinator especially.

"I think I was around 13 when I first read 'Still I Rise' and I remember instantly falling in love with the words Maya Angelou had beautifully expressed. Granted I was 13 so I hadn't risen much and was probably still falling but the poem empowered me immensely. Every few months I reread her words and become inspired once more to celebrate the richness of my culture and explore all the cultures that fill the tapestry of our world. Hence why, I can't wait to have cultural conversations about literature, music, food and much more with everyone at BCC" - Departmental Community Coordinator
