Resilience & Wellbeing
Who are we?
We are a student-led committee that recognises and acknowledges the significance of pastoral care within the university experience. With psychology being a demanding course at the University of York, we want to provide a safe space for all students to relax and share their worries about university life.
Our background
In summer 2022, Karisha George worked with two student interns and another member of staff to develop the Resilience hub. This included various resources for students to access in order to further develop their resilience and enhance their wellbeing.
The hub invited students to develop various strengths in relation to their Purpose, Resourcefulness, Optimism and Perseverance (PROP). Within each of these areas, students were further guided to consider where they stood in each of the areas of PROP in relation to academic, personal/emotional and social dimensions.
This hub was interactive - students first evaluated their existing levels, engaged with the resources based on the results of this assessment, and then further strengthened the emerging skill with a set of activities.
Based on the success of this hub, the Resilience and Wellbeing Committee was formed to apply what was learned about student resilience (based on what they most accessed on the hub) to run a range of activities and talks for further support.
The hub has now been developed into the Success at York toolkit, but we still continue on...
We run workshops with our Student Wellbeing Officer to provide students with tools to manage their stress and show compassion for themselves. This semester, we are running Craft & Chat sessions for students to destress and get together outside of classes. We will also collaborate with the different colleges in the near future to ensure resilience and well-being all around campus!
