Two significant elements of my identity are my faith and my heritage. In this project, my main goal was to explore these two concepts. While brainstorming, I came up with a hand-themed idea. Hand accessories and designs such as henna are all ways that make hands a unique part of South Asian culture. Their intricate patterns and composition give a snippet into the distinct and notable attributes of Indian designs.
WPAP Stage
I used Illustrator to make a black and white Wedha Pop Art Portrait. It was important to continuously reference my original image in order to use the appropriate hues to convey the right shading and lighting. This portrait went through many revisions to become more accurate.
Refinement
Using the pen and fill tools were important skills that I developed while using Adobe Illustrator to complete the WPAP. I used darker shades of grey and black to convey shadows as well as lighter shades to depict where the light was hitting on my face.
Design:
In this project, my goal was to explore my Bengali heritage and my religion, Islam. To communicate this idea, I thought of ways to successfully integrate both aspects of myself to create a piece that would celebrate my identity as a Bengali Muslim in an aesthetic and eye-catching way.
I made hands a major theme of my portrait because they served as mini canvases where I could depict Indian designs through henna and South Asian jewelry represented by the bangles and other ornaments on the hand.
The color of henna gave me the idea of having a more scarlet-brown leaning color scheme which was one of the decisions I was most satisfied with in the end.
The background of the piece was another essential component of the portrait. Both Indian and Islamic designs are known for their distinctive designs, with Indian designs involving more curves and foliage while Islamic designs are more geometric. I demonstrated both of these in the background.
Patterning and repetition were two principles of design that were heavily emphasized throughout my project, from the henna patterns to the background to the lanterns.
