I chose to focus my minimal poster design on the Spectator’s Science department. Some important elements that come to mind when I think of scientific news is:
⤷ curiosity
⤷ the far reach of science
⤷ science icons (atom, flask, stars, explosions)
I gathered reference images from the Internet which reflected these elements and sketched out designs that incorporated them.
I moved on with and built on two of my designs. Here, I played around with designs and aesthetics to determine what I wanted to go with.
My sketch on the left is more structured and rigid. This is due to the rectangles and circles composing the piece. The design on the left speaks more to the creative flow of science from the fumes that are coming from the flask.
I started with the flask design on Illustrator but changed my mind halfway through. I then started to work on the other design and realized I liked it better.
Design:
For this project, I chose to focus my minimal poster design on the Spectator’s Science department.
Some techniques I used in Illustrator were:
⤷ handling the pen tool + shape tool
⤷ text effects (rounded corners and shadow)
⤷ using the transparency/opacity slider
⤷ twirl tool
To bring less attention to the background than the information in the poster, I took the advice to create a slightly transparent strip in the middle of the poster to put in the details of the club.
I also had to be aware of the limited space and remember to focus on working with the area that I had.
I experimented with many distortion tools in Illustrator such as the pucker, warp, and twirl tools.
