For our puppet project, we decided to come up with a plot that would combine humor and a fairytale, emulating a lighthearted SNL sketch that we stumbled upon called “The Princess and the Curse”. From this story, we planned out three characters: a prince, a princess, and a sorceress. For the prince and princess, we used Flynn Rider and Rapunzel as rough references. On the other hand, for the sorceress, rather than referencing an already existing character, we thought of coming up with an original character style and went along with the image of a tribal sorceress. We used Sculptris to mold the faces of these characters, especially taking advantage of the “grab” and “draw” tools in the software.
We used different shades of gouache to paint the three heads. While painting, it was important to keep the paint relatively dry and barely dip the tip of the brush in water. Gouache paint was a fairly cooperative medium to deal with as it was convenient to mix different colors to achieve desired colors, especially regarding skin tone, and the consistency worked well on the material of the 3D models.
While brainstorming costumes for the puppets, we wanted to implement different fabrics and colors for each puppet so they would each have their own aesthetic.
Prince:
For the prince, we added a cream-colored shirt with a sash, blue plants, and a red cape. We intended to use royal colors, especially red, to be used for the prince.
Sorceress:
Similar to how we used a Chobani mango cup as a sort of support for the princess dress, we used a plastic cup as a base for the sorceress’s dress. The sorceress’s dress is unique in the way that we attached the satin fabric as feathers onto a cream-colored fabric that constituted the layer underneath. The sorceress’s top is made of an obscure rubber material we found in the classroom. For the cape, we implemented a high-collar style which we borrowed from Maleficent.
Princess:
To emphasize the princess’s gown, we used a Chobani mango yogurt cup as the base and layered the fabrics of the gown over it. The gown is composed of a thin gold layer underneath a light blue felt fabric. Her shoulders have puffs made from the material used for the lower layer. Her cape is made from a satin turquoise fabric. We bejeweled the gown with plastic jewels and used a thin white string as lacing which divides her torso from the bottom half of her dress. For a finishing touch, we added a little gold flower on her bosom.
Since our story starts with a scene involving the sorceress and the princess as a baby, we created a baby bundle by wrapping cloth around a block of foam. We tied the bundle up with a white string and put a little tiara on it to show that it was the baby princess.
We created the crown and tiara for the prince and princess by using gold colored pastel paper and plastic jewels that we had also used for the princess's gown.
