Artist Statement
In this project, I decided to incorporate Gothic and African architecture. I used designs seen in Gothic cathedrals such as the spires and arcs as well as the distinctive wooden spikes sticking out of mud clay in mosques in Timbuktu. For my final piece, I first made all the props (cones, ribbed vaults, and sculptamold) before deciding on where to place them on the foam core. In the cones, I used elements of Gothic architecture such as the commonness of crosses, the multi-side-base pyramids, and the ribbed vaults. I added an abstract twist to them, such as sewing upside-down crosses and angling the vaults in different ways. Inspired by the mosques in Timbuktu, I used sculptamold and a Chobani® peach yogurt container to create a circular cylindrical structure in which I put needles to imitate the wooden spikes in the African structure from my research. My goal for this project was to essentially create a relief sculpture that speaks to my two chosen time periods and is simultaneously chaotic and intentional.
Working my way to the final piece, I tried to break apart the elements of my initial mini sculpture in an attempt to emphasize the abstract qualities of my original concept.
Many of the ideas that developed the abstract quality distinctive to this piece came to me suddenly and I just acted on them. An example of this is the use of the thin strips of masking tape to connect the sides of the cones. The unevenness and the unusual angling of the cones complement the distinctive angling of the vaults which I made by cutting the wood into 60°and 45°angles.
Finished Piece
I used a combination of tacky glue, pins, and some small supporting pieces of wood to secure the vaults into the foam board. To make the "fillings" of the vault, I used stock paper and scored them from a corner to give a fan-like quality to them.
Detail Pictures
I incorporated velum in my piece by putting it through wooden spokes on the top of my sculptamold sculpture. I mixed glue and ink on another piece of vellum and pasted it on another piece of vellum like a stamp. I put some pieces of clear tape over my sculptamold to better secure it along with tacky glue.
