Artist Statement
For my book, I wanted to describe the color green through different experiences, emotions, places, and actions. I was inspired by the effect of synesthesia where a person sees a color when listening to music or hearing a word and vice versa. I chose to make an accordion book because I felt this type of book would give me more freedom in decorating it to my own vision, such as using different mediums and integrating pop-ups.

I wanted to make full use of the limited amount of space I had as my pages were about the size of my hand. Some ways I did this was actually adding more space by folding in paper. For example, I folded the page with the road trip into three sections so the reader would have to unfold it to reveal a picture of driving through a beautiful green scenery.

I took advantage of the versatility of accordion books by including pop ups and interactive elements that helped in conveying parts of my story. For example, I used a pop up to illustrate an aquarium with green light "reflected" on the page a bit, and I made a pop up plant with a watering can. To approach the concept of the contrast between the outside and the inside of a green geode, I created a rotating changing picture. The reader would have to rotate the tab attached to the piece to reveal the inside of a geode, thus adding an element of surprise.

For the last panel of my book, I wanted it to be reflective of the title and tie the whole book together. To make the green/emerald stained-glass effect, I used watercolor on vellum and glued it on paper that had many shapes I intricately cut out. This acts as a "door" that the reader would have to open to reveal a glistening emerald green eye.

I continued the collage style for the end page and back cover, filling the space with words and pictures that I associated with green. This includes pictures of emeralds, jewelry, leaves, and words like "autumnal displays" and "rhythms of the planet."
