Today Logan and I went down to the floor and did our manual lathe challenge with Jacob.
We learned the basic operations of the lathe such as turning it on and off, how to operate the chuck and the carriage, how to change speeds and which way things should go for certain maneuvers.
Our first step on the lathe was to make sure the chuck was tight because if its too loose it'll fly off. We used a chuck key for this. After that we put our part in the chuck and made sure that was also secure, we used the chuck key for this as well.
After making sure everything is square and in the correct places for our operation we went ahead and turned the machine on and made our first initial face cut and determined our first zero. After determining our zero we backed the cutter (which is a carbide insert) up and made a -0.02 thou face cut.
After that we turned the diameter from 1.426 to 1.2 plus or minus 0.005 thou. We had 0.5 thou rough cuts and a 0.02 thou finish.
My finish for cutting on the 3 jaw was 1.201
We switched it over to the four jaw and dialed the part in 0.0005, we did a 0.2 face cut and 0.05 OD cut.
I decided to include my cheat sheet for machinist language here:
0.1- one hundred thou
0.01- ten thou
0.001 one thou
0.0001 one tenth of a thou
