Foundation Mathematics is designed to equip students with practical mathematical skills and knowledge applicable to a wide range of real-world scenarios, such as personal finance and workplace tasks. Its emphasis on practical application makes it an accessible and highly relevant choice for a broad range of students. The study progressively builds students' capabilities, starting with consolidating foundational mathematical concepts in Units 1 and 2, which also serve as preparation for the more advanced applications in Units 3 and 4. Students learn to apply various techniques, including arithmetic operations, data interpretation and geometric constructions, with and without the use of technology.
While the actual maths isn't super tricky, students will need to be good at reading and understanding problems. To do well, it's not just about getting the right answer, but really understanding why things work the way they do. For assessment, students will utilise a scientific calculator, typically acquired during Years 7-10. Additionally, the allowance of one bound reference book in all assessment tasks provides valuable support for students in demonstrating their understanding and problem-solving abilities.
Studying VCE Foundation Mathematics allows students to study various TAFE courses. Please see the Pathways Coordinator for further details.
