Practicing the Presence of God

Practicing the Presence of God

Pastor Richard Hovey

“He does not ask much of us, merely a thought of Him from time to time, a little act of adoration, sometimes to ask for His grace, sometimes to offer Him your sufferings, at other times to thank Him for the graces, past and present, He has bestowed on you, in the midst of your troubles to take solace in Him as often as you can. Lift up your heart to Him during your meals and in company; the least little remembrance will always be the most pleasing to Him. One need not cry out very loudly; He is nearer to us than we think.”

Tips for Practicing the Presence of God

  • Begin your day intentionally recognizing a God who is present.

  • Practice turning the mundane into holy moments: tasks that you need to get done that are somewhat mindless are great opportunities for prayer or to reflect on God.

  • Stop mid-day and pray (converse with God), interrupting your regular routine to pause and acknowledge a God who is aware of you.

  • Another practice, the Daily Examen, is a way at the end of your day to reflect on where God was knowingly present in your day and where he seemed not to be present; reflect on both and ask why this was.
