Kimmy Cantrell is an artist from Atlanta, Georgia. He took a ceramics class in high school, but has no other formal art training. He taught himself as an adult, so he is self-taught.
His work is inspired by Picasso and Cubism and tribal masks from the African Continent. His clay masks are mostly asymmetrical. Watch the video below to see more about him and how to start our project.
We are going to break down this project in two parts:
The first is drawing the shape and design, adding details with crayons or oil pastels and finishing a painting of the mask with watercolors.
The second is making the mask out of cardboard or clay. Use what you have access to at home. There are instructions for both types below.
Follow the instructions below to make a mask in Kimmy Cantrell style. Keep your final draft for the next round of this project. Remember that your mask should be asymmetrical or not the same on both sides.

Draw three practice versions of masks inspired Kimmy Cantrell using different combinations of features.
Combine the best parts of each version you made or choose your favorite. Draw it filling a normal 8.5'' x 11''. This will be used as a template when we get to clay or cardboard.
Take your design and draw it larger on a piece of watercolor or thick paper.
Draw your face with pencil
Outline it with permanent marker
Create sections and outline each area with pastel or crayon. You can color in your eyes or small areas.
Add texture with lines and patterns in each area. They can be different colors than the outline around each area.
With watercolor, paint in each section with the color you used to outline these sections.
Paint the background one color.
This is a good breakdown of the project in two parts. This first video covers the first part shown above, but they color and cut the project differently.
If you are using cardboard at home, use the videos below to show you how.
Watch this video about Kimmy Cantrell and how how to plan and make a painting/drawing of your mask.
This video show us how to create a cardboard mask out of your drawing.
Here is another example of how to do the project and includes more examples.
Follow the the video to create your own clay mask. This video uses clay that needs to be fired in a kiln. You could use air dry clay if you don't have access to a kiln.
