Players and Parents,

I just finished sorting the Tryout Spreadsheet.  We have over 42 people who are trying out for Varsity soccer this season.  My original plan was to play the summer schedule, have a tryout in August and then make a decision.  However, after seeing these numbers and recognizing that we have quality players across all classes and age groups, I realize that I will have to remove at least 22 from the Varsity roster. While I will consult and review with the entire coaching staff, the ultimate decision will be mine.  I have worked with many of you over the years and have a tremendous amount of respect for all of you and your parents.  I also realize that it is better to hurt feelings and upset players early before all the extra work than cutting them later or simply not getting any playing time. I have made it a point to always respect the fact that Seniors and Juniors have “paid their dues” and deserve to be kept on the team.  While I still feel that is the correct way to handle most tryouts/teams, Alabama’s new enforcement provisions of the 22 man roster limit have put us in a position where upperclassmen will have to be either cut or maintained on J.V.. There are groups appealing this interpretation and if the rule changes or is modified I will modify my position as well.  I have created a form for all Sophomore-Senior players (next year) to fill out. Pretty much every player that is receiving this played a role in a hugely successful season at all levels and you are appreciated. Many of you who may be left off the roster would start for ANY other team in Etowah or neighboring counties.

This will not affect our decisions in a negative way and we expect every player to think about things, discuss it with their parents, and fill out the forms.  Due to the sheer numbers and sensitivities involved I request no calls or emails regarding this situation.
