This Fortuneteller is in response to how we use our hands to make, connect, or predict. The fortune teller can be both a tool for reflection and a visual framework for artmaking process.
To make this fun interactive artwork, we worked as a class each making our visual and written gratitude design for our hands. I then made the fortuneteller folds as instructed by our teacher. The folds revealed empty sides of the paper that could be used to further the gratitude experience, maybe a potential game! I undid the folds to do some drawings. I felt as though the initial drawing spoke to me a lot so I did drawings of activities I do with my hand based on my written gratitude text on the other side of the paper. I then folded the triangles in and wrote game prompts that can be done with each drawing set when opened to reveal. Finally I added some numbers on the outer parts in order to help with determining which game prompt each person would do by having them choose numbers between one to four.
What three questions would enhance the understanding of the big idea?
What are some things you do with our hands everyday?
what are some things you create with your hands?
what things would you be unable to do if you just had legs?
What three skills need to be taught to students for this to happen?
The ability to follow and remember directions and work as partners
Hand eye co-ordination for folding and playing the game
Basic drawing and writing skills
What other considerations would be necessary?
It is important to warn the importance of folding precisely so that the fortuneteller comes together nicely. The interior drawings need to be readable to everyone while it might not need to be for the writings. The students are free to create their own games/ drawing designs if they follow the order of folds properly. Also, note that the final size of the fortuneteller depends on the initial size of the square paper.
Initial Drawing, exterior side. We did multiple outlines of our hands with different colors of gel pen and then wrote all the thing we are grateful to do with our hands.
Interior Drawings based on the initial hand drawing and gratitude text.
Interior Folded, Game Prompts:
Repeat games: repeat what you see
Memory game: recall a time you did something similar
Acting game (pantomime): Act out the activities without words
Dare game: Do one of the activities for another person
In order to play the games you have to ask your partner to choose a number between one and four, you will then open and close the fortune teller that many counts and repeat this again. Now you will do the game that is facing you partner when open. The photo example here is Acting game. You have to unfold the game to reveal the images to act out for this game. You can use the drawing on the other side if you want as well, but keeping things limited is part of the fun.
