Who Does Jesus Call?

Do you know the names of Jesus' 12 disciples? Jesus called a special group of followers to be His disciples. They accompanied Jesus wherever He went, all throughout His three-year mission on earth.

These 12 men were just ordinary people. Jesus didn't just called them to help Him; He called them so that He can be their friend, teach them, and prepare them to fulfill the great work of proclaiming the good news of God's love to all the nations of the world, even so after Jesus had left them (Acts 1:8). In spite of their imperfections, Jesus called them to join His team. God always chooses ordinary people, just like you and me, to bring glory to His name.

And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Matthew 4:19

The word disciple simply means a follower. But for the disciples, it wasn’t as simple as following Jesus around. They weren’t just Jesus’ helpers or servants, they followed Him to observe and learn everything they could from Him. In Matthew 4:19, Jesus also told the them that they will be fishers of men, which means sharing with others about God's love and telling others to follow Jesus!

1. What He did: The disciples saw how Jesus cared for people. They saw how Jesus loved people and God. They saw how He responded to people who loved Him and those who hated Him.

2. What He knew: Jesus taught the disciples about Scripture, how to pray, how to have a relationship with God, and the importance of having a steadfast faith.

3. Who He was: On multiple occasions, Jesus told His disciples that He was the Son of God. The magnitude of that revelation didn’t sink in right away; rather, they had to see Him perform miracles and signs in order for them to understand the power their friend and teacher possessed.

All of the things the disciples observed and learned, when they were with Jesus, helped them to spread the good news of God's love everywhere they went. Yes, to be fishers of men and messengers of the Gospel!

You and I, as disciples of Jesus, are also called to fish for people and spread the Good News of God's love! We can do so with whatever gifts He has blessed us with. We can show others how Jesus' love has transformed our life, through our attitude, actions and speech.

Let's tell others about Jesus' love today!
