Why is this stage important?
Good onboarding sets people up to succeed. It helps new employees understand expectations, feel confident in their role, and become productive more quickly, while also reducing stress, mistakes, and turnover.
When someone is brand new to a position, onboarding needs to build context from the ground up, including the purpose of the organisation, key systems, partner relationships, and the “why” behind the work. When there’s a handover, these things remain important, but there is an additional focus on continuity. In WP work, it is especially important to capture institutional knowledge, unfinished work, key relationships, and community nuances to limit disruption and maintain trust.
