In 2012, advocates successfully lobbied for a mandatory weekly day off for foreign domestic workers. However, many employers remain reluctant to grant this right — The Straits Times reported in 2013 that only 1/3 of foreign domestic workers actually get weekly off-days. Stories have since surfaced of workers being dismissed for insisting on exercising this right.
All In A Day’s Rest is a panel discussion which aims to explore if our society can rest easy at the plight of foreign domestic workers in Singapore. What more should Singapore do to promote and safeguard the welfare and rights of migrant domestic workers?
Mr. Jolovan Wham (Executive Director, HOME Singapore), Senior Lecturer Sheila Hayre (NUS Law) and Assistant Professor Anju M. Paul (Yale-NUS College) will present the intricacies of this issue from the advocacy, socio-legal and sociological perspectives respectively and share insights on the intersections between gender, nationality, work and migration.
