The original Ormeau station opened on 24 January 1889, when the line was extended from Beenleigh to Southport. The original site of the station was west of the current station by the Pacific Motorway. The station opened at its current location on 25 February 1996, when the line was rebuilt from Beenleigh to Helensvale. It was extended to Nerang on 16 December 1997, then to Robina on 31 May 1998 and to Varsity Lakes on 13 December 2009.
Ormeau serves the homonymous suburb of Ormeau which was named after Ormeau House which was the estate owned by Major Alexander Jenyns Boyd who was a sugar planter in the area in the 1860s.
The station itself has two platforms consisting of two side platforms. Platform 1 is for outbound services and platform 2 is used for inbound services.
Ormeau station has two station entrances. One is from the carpark on Mirambeena Road and the other is from Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School.
Ormeau station does have disability access.
There is a bus interchange outside the station in the carpark. The routes that serve Ormeau are routes 721, 722, 728 and 729.
