Helensvale station opened at its original location approximately 3 kilometres north west of the current station at the on 25 January 1889 at the present site of Helensvale State High School and Helensvale Hogs Rugby Union Football Club when the South Coast line was opened. The line was closed on 30 June 1964. The station was reopened after it was rebuilt at its current location as the terminus of the Gold Coast line on 25 February 1996. The line was later extended to Nerang on 16 December 1997, then to Robina on 31 May 1998 and finally to Varsity Lakes on 13 December 2009. The Gold Coast light rail station adjacent to the train station opened in January 2017.
Helensvale station was named after the homonymous suburb of Helensvale. It was named after Ernest’s sugar plantation who was William White’s son who was an early settler of the area. It is believed that the plantation was named after Ernest’s sister Helena.
Helensvale station has two platforms consisting of an island platform. Platform 1 is for outbound services, platform 2 is for inbound services and platforms 4 and 5 are for light rail services.
Helensvale station has only one entrance which is from the carpark on Town Centre Drive.
Helensvale does have disability access.
There is a bus interchange outside the station in the carpark serving nearby suburbs. The routes serving Helensvale station are routes 704 to Sea World via Surfers Paradise, 710, 714, 715, 716, 717, 718, 723, 725, 727 and TX7 to Coomera station via Theme Parks. The Gold Coast light rail terminates at Helensvale to connect with tram services to and from Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
