Nerang station opened at its original location west of the station near the highway on 25 January 1889 at the opening of the South Coast line. The line was closed on 30 June 1964. The station was reopened after it was rebuilt at its current location as the terminus of the Gold Coast line on 16 December 1997. It was then extended Robina on 31 May 1998 and finally to Varsity Lakes on 13 December 2009.
Nerang station was named after the homonymous suburb of Nerang which was named after the local aboriginal word meaning small river.
Nerang station has two platforms consisting of an island platform. Platform 1 is for outbound services and platform 2 is for inbound services.
Nerang station has two entrances which is from the corner of Warrener Street and Leagues Club Drive and the carpark on Boulton Drive.
Nerang does have disability access.
There is a bus interchange outside the station in the carpark serving nearby suburbs. The routes serving Nerang station are routes 735 (to Southport), 739, 740 (to Surfers Paradise), 743 (to Broadbeach South), 744 (to Broadbeach South), 745 (to Broadbeach South), 746, 748 and 749.
