Sara Williams

My name is Sara Williams and I’m a senior at Durham School of the Arts taking AP Studio. My works are exploring the question of how does the modern perspective of Christianity compares to the traditional perspective. I have always found the study of theology and the ideas questioning religion very intriguing. I was born and baptized Catholic, though as I grew up I found myself not identifying with Catholicism anymore. As when I found myself understanding the world around me more I noticed more people questioning religious ideas, especially Christian teachings, for a variety of reasons. All of my works started with me thinking of how I can challenge a specific Christian figure, story, or experience. Trying to tie in my personal experience, but not making the piece about myself because I feel these conflicting feelings can be felt by many worldwide. In pieces like The Missionaries and Heavens Gate, I made my figures abstract and nondistinct to represent these mutual feelings about Christianity. As well as using color to emphasize those figures' emotions. In all my work I tried to structure my pieces so that they can be viewed from multiple perspectives, as I feel the modern perspective, in general, is diverse and there is never one clear definition.
