My name is Nicholas Young and I am a Senior at Durham School of the arts. I use art as a form of activism and primarily focus my work on social justice issues plaguing contemporary society. This year I’m using my portfolio as a lens to explore social constructs. I have a very unique experience and most people's interpretation of images is dependent upon their background. My goal is for people to look at my works and ask “How do these seemingly unrelated elements come together and make you think differently about the subject or concept being proposed”. An example of this is a portrait of a Black woman that had a sale sign at the bottom of the page. I used these two elements to explore the exploitation and commodification of Black identity. I also made a diptych as a way to critique the gender binary by using the phrases “Boys Wear Blue” and “Girls Wear Pink” but coloring the letters in the color that is usually associated with the other gender.
