My name is Mavis Carroll, I am a senior at Durham School of the Arts, and have been in the arts pathways at DSA since the 6th grade, with 2-D, photography, and a year of digital design. My inquiry question for this year was "How does/has/will technology effect our lives (as humans)?". This question felt relevant to me because I'm a very 'tech savvy' person, I absolutely love studying old technology, I've built my own PC recently, I enjoy fixing and reconstructing older video game consoles- technology is what i consider to be my strong suit. Technology is something that revolves around us, especially myself, so I felt I would get alot out of making my inquiry about technology. I've explored this in a few separate directions with my pieces- with my earlier pieces being very flat and surface level, then going into a series of self-portraits, and now where I am searching how to put myself and my influence into works that are not self portraits. My early pieces, such as the abstracted vinyl and the Andy Warhol inspired robots, are very different- yet connected- to more recent pieces such as the collage self portrait and the charcoal camera.
