The RIGHT NOW Essay #17
............
As I sit here in the dark, practicing and playing the piano, my restless mind never stops wandering.
I find myself analyzing everything about the world right now.
I think about humanity, the entirety of human history, extinction events, and the inner workings of the human brain.
I analyze neurology, psychology, and mental illness.
I think specifically about how different parts of the brain interact with each other.
For example, my cerebral cortex works great, but my nervous system is completely out of whack.
I contrast how our human minds work with this developing new species of life we are creating with AGI.
I compare how we think to how artificial intelligence processes information.
It is similar, yet light years apart.
I think this highlights just how incredibly fragile we human beings truly are.
It feels almost as if our fragility is some kind of inherent design flaw.
..........
PART 2 "The Poem"
Anyway, my dad recently shared a poem with
me about marriage and non-attachment.
It has been echoing in my mind ever since.
"Two palms turned upward, open to the air,
holding no weight, demanding no decree.
The bond is not a tether or a debt;
it only breathes because the soul is free.
No one can rob a house that has no locks,
where nothing is withheld, and nothing claimed.
The devotion is the giving, light as breath,
unmeasured, untouched, and unashamed.
It is waking to the vastness of the world,
with every wing unfurled to meet the day,
and finding that the sweetest, truest wild
is having flight, and choosing still to stay."
.............
I love how beautifully it explains that true love is never a tether or a debt.
It is about leaving the door open.
It is about entirely releasing the need to own another person.
............
PART 3 "Right Now"
This brings me to the anxiety we often feel regarding the unknowable future.
Who even knows if the future or the concept of time are even real things.
Time could just be some imaginary construct that we humans use to feel like we have some kind of control.
I think the reality is that we have absolutely no control over what comes next.
So perhaps the most meaningful thing in life is simply living right now, in this exact moment.
At the very least, my dad and I are both alive and finding our own versions of peace and meaning.
He is living it up in a busy house with a lovely wife and beautiful babies.
Meanwhile, I am genuinely enjoying myself, playing the piano in the dark with zero responsibility to anyone or anything.
I guess the ultimate takeaway is to just enjoy every moment we have right now.
I am sure Jeffrey Jefferson and Mister Marty would absolutely agree with that philosophy.
That is, provided they get plenty of hugs and their next meal is served precisely on time.
...............
PART 4 "Greensleeves: Bitter Descent"
So anyways, here I am in this exact moment.
My hands gently caress the piano keys as I work through my latest arrangement.
I call it "Greensleeves: Bitter Descent."
It is a piece of my own making, born directly from the heavy quiet of my soul.
I shared the lyrics with my dad because I find it quite interesting how similar our creative minds are.
He is writing beautiful poems about true love and a real, enduring marriage.
Meanwhile, I am over here crafting a musical response about the devastating loss of one.
To give you some context on where my head is at, I want to share the spoken intro I wrote for the video.
In this intro, I explain how my version blends sixteenth-century courtly prose with sharp modern realism.
..............
PART 5 SPOKEN INTRO
Alright, welcome wonderful people.
My version of this 400-year-old English folk song honors its legacy.
Greensleeves: Bitter Descent is a dark love song that blends 16th-century courtly prose with sharp modern realism.
It tells a tale as old as time, creating a soundscape that sounds both ancient and arrestingly modern.
So what does “Greensleeves” even mean anyways?
Legend has it that the original song told the story of a lad and a grass-stained sleeved young lady.
It covered the inevitable heartbreak of the unrequited love that followed their romp in the grass.
Well, I have upped the ante here.
This isn't just about losing some fleeting mistress.
It is about the devastating death of a marriage and the betrayal that followed.
I have stripped away the sad puppy-dog energy of the original.
I want to tell the tale of the descent of one’s soul down into the desolate hell of life that was left behind after such tremendous heartbreak.
Alright. Let’s go. Prepare to be entertained, at least.
..................
PART 6 PIANO THERAPY
I have been leaning heavily into songwriting and practicing this piece as a deep form of therapy.
I play it over and over, refining it right now.
I want to ensure that when I perform it live for you on this channel, it will be something memorable.
Just reading these lyrics only gives you a tiny glimpse of the actual experience.
Wait until you can see me sing and play it live.
It is hard to grasp the full weight of it through text alone.
The dynamic range, the precise piano technique, and the sharp articulation in the music elevate it completely.
Pouring that powerful range of human emotion directly into the keys turns the performance into quite a moving spectacle.
................
PART 7 In Christ Alone
Working through this bitter darkness organically has actually led me in a new direction.
To contrast that heavy darkness, I have started learning to play one of my absolute favorite Christian songs, "In Christ Alone."
I love how this song perfectly breaks down the entirety of Christian theology into one beautiful progression.
One specific line in the second chorus chokes me up and brings me to tears almost every single time I sing it.
It is the moment when Jesus is dying on the cross, and somehow this satisfies the wrath of God.
The song then declares that He stands in victory, and the curse of sin has lost its grip on me.
It says I am His and He is mine.
These concepts represent the ultimate release of a massive, crushing burden.
It means that my debt has been completely paid in full, leaving me entirely guilt-free in the present moment.
This makes me realize that this divine grace perfectly mirrors my dad's thoughts on human connection.
It contrasts with his ideas about how we do not own anything or anyone in this chaotic world.
I certainly do not want to keep any human soul on a leash.
However, if the theology really is true, then I would like to speculate on his poem.
If the goal is not owning anyone, there is one profound exception to that rule.
The only thing I truly own is Christ living inside of me right now.
That grace, which is so freely given, produces such tremendous joy in my spirit.
It feels just like the unashamed devotion my dad described in his writing.
It is a powerful, immovable truth to build an internal fortress around.
Jeffrey Jefferson and Mister Marty are currently sleeping right through this entire existential piano session I'm going through, not worried about a thing in the world.
They seem to have the concept of resting in the present moment completely figured out.
....................
PART 8 CONCLUSION
I thought all of this was interesting, and I wanted to share it with you, my viewers.
I want at least someone to know exactly where my head, heart, spirit, and soul are right now.
I was truly inspired after reading my dad's words.
Regarding my song, I know that just reading the lyrics without the music is not the most exciting experience.
But as a music lover and an aspiring songwriter, I know I can identify a masterpiece in the works when I see one.
I am building it right here, in this very moment.
I really look forward to performing it for you sometime soon so you can experience the full weight of it.

all while thinking a lot about the anxiety we feel regarding the unknowable future. Who even knows if the "future" or even the concept of "time" are even a real things. Reflections in the Dark
To give you a brief bit of background on the song itself. The classic folk tune carries a very gentle, almost pathetic sense of longing. I completely erased that passive emotion.
I wanted the music to reflect a reality that is much darker and far more permanent. The focus shifted entirely away from a simple romantic crush that failed to materialize.
Instead, this piece explores the absolute collapse of a sacred commitment. It captures the psychological free fall a person experiences when a profound bond is shattered by disloyalty. It examines the absolute ruin left in the wake of total heartbreak.
Let me share the exact transcript of how I set up the performance right now.
