Fine Motor Development

Fine motor skills help a child engage in their environment and participate in activities in the classroom and at home. Fine motor, as opposed to gross motor, is used for precision tasks and requires strength and control of the little muscles in the hand. Often, children have not had the opportunity to use and develop those little muscles enough to have the dexterity needed for precision tasks that are expected of them at school.

Here, we will review concepts related to the development of fine motor skills and provide strategies you can try in your classroom.

Assistive Technology

Students who struggle with fine motor skills often benefit from the use of technology to help them communicate their learning and their thinking while they continue to work on developing their fine motor skills.
