OTs can provide suggestions to assist children to develop fine motor skills (i.e. printing, cutting) appropriate for their grade level
OTs can help make learning accessible and allow students to show what they know when written output is challenging.
OTs can suggest strategies and equipment that teachers can use to support children with sensory issues.
OTs can initiate adaptations to the school environment (i.e. classroom, playground, washroom) to increase a child's ability to participate.
OTs can suggest supportive seating options for classroom activities (i.e. a floor seat to allow a student who cannot sit independently to join their peers on the carpet at circle time.
Occupational Therapists offer assessments and recommendations related to the above. For the purposes of this site we are focusing on the sensory and fine motor components of how an OT might help a student in your class.
Occupational therapists at KidsInclusive collaborate with schools and teachers to assess children and provide strategies to better support their function in the school environment. Following an assessment, the OT will provide strategies that are recommended to be implemented in the school setting. The degree of involvement for each student is variable and needs-based.
The role of the school-based occupational therapist is consultative. KidsInclusive does not provide direct intervention but rather will support the school in the implementation of strategies and recommendations.
