従属節主語には「が」または「の」をつけることができます。
(1) 私は先生が書いた本を読んだことがあります。
(2) 私は先生の書いた本を読んだことがあります。
「が」と「の」のどちらを使用しても文の意味が変わらないことから、「が」と「の」は文法のバリエーションと考えることができます。

上の「が」と「の」の使用には、「が」がより多く使用されるという状態に向かう言語変化が観察されました。（南部 2007, Nambu 2019）
Harada (1971)やShibatani (1975)でも変化の可能性について言及されていましたが、コーパスを用いることでその変化を定量的に観察することができました。また、新国ほか(2017), Ogawa (2018), 小川(2019)でも変化の存在が証明されています。
また、名詞句＋「の」の主語としての解釈は所有としての解釈(e.g. 「太郎の本」)と競合しますが、よりフォーマルな環境ではカジュアルの場合より主語解釈がより誘発されることがわかっています。(Nambu 2013)

「の」から「が」への変化は「の」の使用率の減少と同時に「の」が使用できる環境も縮小しています。(Nambu & Matsuda 2007, Nambu 2019)
例えば、左のグラフは隣接性の効果を示しており、主語がその述部と隣接していない場合には隣接している場合より「の」の使用率が低いことがわかります。
隣接： 私は先生の書いた本を読んだことがあります。
非隣接： 私は先生の一昨年書いた本を読んだことがあります。
隣接性効果の原因については、心理言語学的手法によって検証することで、どういった要因で「の」の使用が抑制されているのか調べています。(Nambu & Nakatani 2023)
