In order to track the perimeter of a neighborhood in the field, enumerators are instructed to walk the boundaries of a neighborhood with a cellphone with the GPS tracking app “Strava” activated.
First, an account on https://www.strava.com/ has to be created. On the Strava website click “use my email” at the top to create a new account.
Then, in this sign up form use e.g. First Name “sani”, Last Name “path” and include the Gmail address form Step 1. Create the same or a similar password from Gmail and store this information for future usage.
Download the Strava app from either the “App Store” (on iOS) or “Google Play” (on Android) and sign in using the credential created on the website.
To record a perimeter-walk simply select “Record” on the buttons on the bottom of the mobile phone screen and start the walk. When the walk is completed select the “stop” button and then the “finish” button. On the next screen, a name can be given to this specific walk/ neighborhood and when the “save” button is selected the process is completed.
Note: The app does not require internet connectivity while recording the GPS trace during the walk. It will automatically upload the saved walks when the mobile phone is connected to the internet.
To retrieve the recorded information, on a computer, log into the Strava account on https://www.strava.com/. On the top of the screen under “Training” select “My Activities” and all recorded walks will be listed. Select the desired entry and a map, distance, and time of the recording is shown.
To export the GPX file for the selected walk, click the “wrench symbol” on the left hand side of the screen and select “Export GPX”.
The next step is to save the GPX file in an appropriate location on the computer.
