Look straight up! You are standing right under European Buckthorn!
Did You Know? Common Buckthorn can grow up to six meters in height!
PLEASE DO NOT EAT COMMON BUCKTHORN!
Common Buckthorn, or more formally known as European Buckthorn is an invasive species that is native to Eurasia and was introduced to North America in the 1800’s. Common Buckthorn is often found in woodlands and open fields, and they can invade roadsides, farm fields and hydro corridors. Common Buckthorn forms dense thickets that crowd and shade out native plants which make them an invasive and harmful species.
How Is Buckthorn Invasive?
Buckthorn can produce large numbers of seeds that germinate quickly. That prevents the growth of trees native to the area. Buckthorn is aggressively spread through birds that carry the seeds of the berries produced by the plants in their droppings.
