Classes

At Richmond Tamil School, we follow the American Tamil Academy (“ATA”) curriculum. ATA is a volunteer-run organization of Tamil School members who have worked to develop a common syllabus that addresses the Tamil-instruction needs of those learning/teaching Tamil in the United States. Accordingly, ATA has developed text books, exercise books and other multimedia resources. Richmond Tamil School currently teaches Tamil to over 200 kids, in 8 levels, with the help of about 15 volunteer teachers. Students are assigned to courses based upon their age and current knowledge of Tamil. Our long term goal is to develop our content so that the children will be able to receive language credit at their public schools for attending Tamil classes.

குழந்தைகளின் வயதும் தமிழ்க்கல்வியறிவில் முன் அனுபவமும் கொண்டு கீழ்க்காணும் பல நிலைகளில் வகுப்புகள் நடைபெறுகின்றன.

Mazhalai மழலை

//Mazhalai class is conducted for children ages 5-6. Children in Kindergarten are admitted to Mazhalai class.

The lessons are designed for children to learn Tamil through the pictures, stories, and songs in order to create interest in learning Tamil. The lessons cover Tamil Letters, conversation, stories, songs, a few words currently in use and animation with audio and video facilities.

The Mazhalai class is conducted for children aged 5-6, specifically designed to facilitate their introduction into the Tamil language. Admission is open to Kindergarten students. The curriculum is structured for children to learn Tamil through the utilization of visual and audible aids like pictures, stories, songs, animations, etc., to develop an interest in the Tamil language. The lessons and materials associated with the Mazhalai level encompasses a comprehensive range of material, including Tamil letters, conversational skills, narrative elements, melodic compositions, frequently used terminologies, as well as other multimedia components.

Level 1 - நிலை - 1

The Nilai 1 level is conducted for children aged 5-6 who do not have prior knowledge of Tamil. The eligibility criteria to enroll in this level is being identified by the child's respective county as a First Grade Student. The curriculum of this class is structured to cover a range of topics, including Tamil letters, conversational skills, storytellings, musical compositions, frequently used vocabulary and phrases, as well as other multimedia components to aid these other topics. The primary objective is to master the 12 vowels (uyir ezhuthukal) and 18 consonants (mei ezhuthukal) in the Tamil language.

நிலை 1 என்பது ஐந்து-ஆறு வயதுக் குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் வகுப்பு. அதே நேரத்தில் தமிழில் அறிமுகம் இல்லாத பெரிய குழந்தைகளும் இந்த வகுப்பில் சேருவார்கள்.

இந்த வகுப்பில் எழுத்துகள், உரையாடல், கதைகள், பாடல்கள், வழக்குச் சொற்கள், எண்கள் ஆகியவை படங்கள், இயக்கப் படங்கள், ஒலி, ஒளிக் காட்சிகள் வாயிலாக வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. 12 உயிரெழுத்துகளும், 18 மெய்யெழுத்துகளும் கற்றுத் தேர்தல் இந்நிலையின் குறிக்கோள்.

Level 2 - நிலை – 2

The Nilai 2 level is conducted for children aged 7 and above who have successfully completed and passed Nilai 1. The eligibility criteria to enroll in this level is being identified by the child's respective county as a Second Grade Student. The curriculum of this class is structured to cover a range of topics, including Tamil letters, conversational skills, storytellings, musical compositions, frequently used vocabulary and phrases, as well as other multimedia components to aid these other topics. There is additional emphasis on the reading and writing portions of the curriculum at this stage. The primary objective is to familiarize the students with the vowel+consonants letters (uyir mei ezhuthukal) from அ to ஊ.

நிலை 2 என்பது ஏழு வயதுக்கு மேலான குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் வகுப்பு. நிலை 1 தேர்ச்சி எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும்.

இந்த வகுப்பில் எழுத்துகள், சொற்கள், சிறிய சொற்றொடர்கள், உரையாடல், கதைகள், பாடல்கள், வழக்குச் சொற்கள், எண்கள் ஆகியவை வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துகளில் "அ" முதல் "ஊ" வரிசை வரையான எழுத்துகளைக் கற்றுத் தேர்தல் இந்நிலையின் குறிக்கோள்.

Level 3- நிலை – 3

The Nilai 3 level is conducted for children aged 8 and above who have successfully completed and passed Nilai 2. The curriculum of this class is structured to cover a range of topics, including Tamil letters, conversational skills, storytellings, musical compositions, frequently used vocabulary and phrases, as well as other multimedia components to aid these other topics. There is additional emphasis on the reading and writing portions of the curriculum at this stage. The primary objective is to master all the vowel+consonants letters (uyir mei ezhuthukal).

நிலை 3 என்பது எட்டு வயதுக்கு மேலான குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் வகுப்பு. நிலை 2 தேர்ச்சி கட்டாயமாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும்.

The Nilai 4 level is conducted for children with basic Tamil proficiency who have successfully completed and passed Nilai 3. The curriculum of this class is structured to cover a range of topics, including Tamil letters, limited writing concepts, conversational skills, storytellings, musical compositions, frequently used vocabulary and phrases, as well as other multimedia components to aid these other topics. There is additional emphasis on the reading and writing portions of the curriculum at this stage. The primary objective is to master all the vowel+consonants letters (uyir mei ezhuthukal) along with acquainting the students with basic Tamil grammar, nouns, and verbs.

நிலை 4 என்பது தமிழில் அடிப்படைத் தேர்ச்சி கொண்ட குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் இடைநிலை வகுப்பு. நிலை 3 தேர்ச்சி கட்டாயமாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும். அல்லது தமிழில் நல்ல தேர்ச்சி பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும்.

The Nilai 5 level is conducted for children who have successfully completed and passed Nilai 4 (as this is a direct continuation of the previous level). The curriculum of this class is structured to cover a range of topics, including Tamil letters, conversational skills, storytellings, musical compositions, frequently used vocabulary and phrases, as well as other multimedia components to aid these other topics. There is additional emphasis on the reading and writing portions of the curriculum at this stage. The primary objective is to be a fluent reader and speaker in Tamil as well as being able to write simple paragraphs through guidance and also by themselves during examinations.

நிலை 5 என்பது தமிழில் அடிப்படைத் தேர்ச்சி கொண்ட குழந்தைகளுக்காக நடத்தப்படும் இடைநிலை-மேல்நிலை வகுப்பு. நிலை 4 தேர்ச்சி கட்டாயமாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும். அல்லது தமிழில் நல்ல தேர்ச்சி பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும்.

நிலை 4-ன் தொடர்ச்சியான இலக்கணப்பாடங்கள் நடத்தப்படும். தமிழில் சரளமாகப் பேசவும், சிறிய பத்திகள் எழுதவும், ஆசிரியர் உதவியுடன் சிறிய கட்டுரைகள் எழுதவும் பயிற்சிகள் கொடுக்கப்படும்.

Level 6 - நிலை – 6

The primary objective is to be a fluent reader and speaker in Tamil as well as being able to write a bit more complex paragraphs through guidance and also by themselves during examinations.

The Nilai 7 level is conducted for children who have successfully completed and passed Nilai 6 (as this is a direct continuation of the previous level). This is the highest level offered by the Richmond Tamil School through the ATA course plan. The curriculum of this class is structured to cover a range of topics, including Tamil letters, conversational skills, storytellings, musical compositions, frequently used vocabulary and phrases, as well as other multimedia components to aid these other topics. There is additional emphasis on the reading and writing portions of the curriculum at this stage. The primary objective is to be a fluent reader and speaker in Tamil as well as being able to write a bit more complex paragraphs through guidance and also by themselves during examinations.
