This year the organisation of the conference is led by Iain, Eilidh, Aaron and Claire.
Iain, Eilidh and Aaron are Statistics PhD students from The University of Glasgow. They have been awarded the Maclaurin Scholarship, which is a five-year funded scholarship allowing research to be carried out whilst simultaneously contributing to the department’s extensive teaching programme. Claire is a Statistics PhD student whose research is funded by The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
Iain is a 2nd year Statistics PhD student in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Glasgow. Iain's research covers several aspects of environmental data, primarily looking at modelling concentrations of heavy metal pollutants in river water in the UK alongside collaborators from the Environment Agency. This involves developing novel techniques to incorporate left-censored observations, include correlated multivariate responses and consider river network flow in spatio-temporal models which can be used to accurately predict levels of water pollutants.
Iain’s main roles in the conference are keeping track of the finances and organising the catering, including the gala dinner. Iain is also involved in planning the evening events including the Ceilidh and sub-crawl.
Eilidh is a 3rd year Statistics PhD student in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Glasgow. Eilidh’s research focusses on the statistical modelling of child growth patterns, with a particular interest in understanding growth faltering. By investigating how different approaches, such as functional data analysis, can capture the complexities of child growth trajectories, her aim is to develop robust statistical methods to define child growth faltering.
Eilidh’s main roles in the conference include organising the talk and poster sessions, and creating conference materials. Eilidh is also responsible for designing the logo, running the website and social media, and creating the welcome packs.
Aaron is a 2nd year Statistics PhD student in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Glasgow. Aaron's research concerns developing Bayesian methods for variable selection in large-sample high-dimensional datasets, such as those arising in genetic and genomic contexts. In particular, working on a novel divide-and-conquer algorithm that divides data into batches based on rows and columns, analyses each batch in parallel, and merges the results to form a consensus, allowing for highly efficient computation.
Aaron’s main roles in the conference are booking accommodation, presentation rooms and poster spaces. Aaron is also involved in planning the evening events including the pub quiz.
Claire is a 2nd year Statistics PhD student at the University of Strathclyde. Claire’s research involves the prediction of adverse outcomes in pregnancies complicated by pre-eclampsia using deep neural network models with data collected on the day of admission to the health facility. She aims to assess the added value of certain biomarkers in the predictive models and create a dynamic model that updates the risk prediction when longitudinal data is available.
Claire's main roles in the conference include identifying and contacting sponsors to help ensure this conference is as afforfable as possible.
