Here you will find all the research that will be conducted for my FMP. It will include in-depth research into every aspect of the game with a key focus on the areas I am specifically specializing in. I will be using a variety of different primary and secondary research methods to achieve the most effective outcome with this information. The goal is to provide a clear insight into what I have to create for my FMP and to help me ensure that my animations are authentic and of the highest quality.
all links to the sources i use for information will be available in the bibliography
Reflection on research methods:
Overall, the research I conducted on some of the main research methods I will be using was successful. It not only helped me understand how to effectively implement and organize these methods but also their effectiveness and utility. This understanding aids me in comprehending how these methods will benefit my project. Additionally, this research assisted me in learning the limitations and advantages of each method, teaching me that a variety of different methods need to be employed to obtain effective, useful, and fair information. This information not only covers a wide range of areas but is also of good quality and relevance to my needs.
Genre
For research into the genre of the game, I will be splitting it up into three different aspects: the theme of the game, the art style of the game, and the type of game, which is a roguelike. I am doing this to help give me a better understanding and knowledge of what I'm creating for this project.
Reflection on research into the Genre
Overall, my research into the three different aspects of the genre has been effective in enhancing my knowledge in each respective area. Throughout all three aspects, there are minor improvements I would make to my research. One of the main ones is to include more varied primary research methods, which I hope to incorporate in my future research by conducting activities such as focus groups to gather more diverse information using different techniques. The research into these three different aspects has taught me a variety of things, from assisting me with the basic design of the game to enhancing my understanding of my chosen specialization areas. Some of the most important things it revealed to me include the main animations and mechanics of a roguelike game and what makes them enjoyable, how to effectively portray the art style of monochromatic and what it takes to do so effectively, what some of the essentials are when it comes to modeling in a low-poly style, and some of the traits that I need to convey through the movements of the creatures and characters in the game. These are just some of the things I learned that will help enhance the game we make, as well as the animations and the few models I create.
Animation research
Below you will find all my research on the topic of animation where i will be splitting it up into 2 aspects which i believe that will help the most with making my animations the highest quality i can possible for animation i will be looking at 1. The anatomy of humans and creatures that will feature in our game and 2. personality, characteristics, and jobs of the people from the time.
Also i will be listing all the tutorials that i use in the skill development section you can find here
Reflection on research into Animation
Overall , the research i conducted into these aspects of animation where helpful in giving me a better understand of how the bones and muscles should look in movement in a human , cat and dog body with the successful aim of enhancing my knowledge on the anatomy of humans and animals to help make my animations and better and look more accurate to how they would look in real life .The research i conducted into the personality , characteristics and jobs helped me understand what secondary traits i should show in my animations. While i am happy with the majority of research i conducted i would of liked to find more information on the personality , characteristics and jobs part but due to the time period of the 1500s there was not a lot of reports and extensive information on the this area but i am still happy with the information i found. Overall, the knowledge i gained from this research will help me when i start both pre- production and production and when this newly gained knowledge becomes relevant in this project i will reference it when it is used in pre-production and production.
3D environment research
Reflection on 3D environment research
Overall , i believe i was effective in my aim with my research into 3D environments, as i have now developed a further understanding of the topics i was researching and will help me when i move on to the production phase of the FMP. For this i made multiple mood boards on what asylums looked like in the 1500s and what their interiors looked like which has helped me choose the models i am going to make for the level and inspiration on what they should look like. The research into existing models also helped me as it enhanced my knowledge on the designs ,shapes (like squares) and colours / materials ( like brown/wood) that where used when making these models which will help me in both the modeling and texturing phase. I also effectively looked onto the topology of models especially ones of the low poly style to help give me and understanding of what low poly models should look like and reference and inspiration on how i can portray that artstyle , i also gained an understanding on how topology should look on my models with a main focus on making sure there is consistent squares on my object topology.
There are no improvements i would make to this research as it not only dived into the areas that helped develop my knowledge, but also built on my past mistakes when researching as i combines multiple topics of research into one , while this might not sound good , it is the best way to get the most out of research and ensuring i get high quality research and that is relevant to me. Also doing this helps with making sure all the information i gather will help enhance my final models i create.
Reflection on Research
Overall , i believe i was highly effective in my research as it gave me insight into all the appropriate areas to help make my game the most effective it can be and helped me gain knowledge and ideas on how to make the best possible game and especially the best possible models i can for the FMP.It gave me insight into areas such as anatomy of humans and animal , how to make a low poly style effective and more knowledge of theme of 1500s london .There is one thing i think i could of done better though which is combining appropriate topics into one as this would allow me to get a wider range of information instead of having a page dedicated to one quite unique topic. This would help make my research more concise and more presentable and is something iam already doing and going to work in the future as i carry out more research.
