Here you will find some of the research methods that i will use and why they are effective .
For my research, I will mainly be using qualitative research methods. My secondary research will be based on reports, articles, books, and forums, while my primary research will involve playing different games and analyzing them, conducting surveys, and hosting focus groups to gather information.
All the links to where i find example pictures and information will be in bibliography and attached to the picture.
Mood boards with annotations
What is it?
To the left is an example of a mood board where you collect images for inspiration. This is one of the methods I will be using to showcase my research; it is mainly a secondary form of research.
Why is it effective?
This method is effective as it is useful for gaining inspiration and reference for what you want to create. It also exposes you to different people's interpretations of various things. Additionally, the annotations are invaluable as they help you understand what you want from the picture and why you chose it, for example, what you found useful about it.
What are the limitations?
Some of the limitations of this method are that mood boards can sometimes become a jumble of pictures that have no real correlation to your idea, meaning you lose the primary function of a mood board.
Mind maps with annotations
What is it?
To the left is an example of a mind map where you can collect images and information. This is one of the methods I will be using to showcase research; it is mainly a form of secondary research.
Why is it effective?
This method is effective as it clearly lays out your knowledge and ideas on a certain project. It can also act as a timeline, as each section flows into the next, showing how things connect together in terms of their meaning. Annotations are also invaluable as they help you understand why you chose that piece of information, for example, why it is useful to you.
What are the limitations?
Some limitations of this method are that it can often be quite time-intensive to create, and if you are not careful, it can become quite messy and hard to read, rendering the gathered information useless.
Informative and reflective bullet points
What is it?
To the left is an example of informative and reflective bullet points. This is one of the methods I will be using to present research. This method is mainly a secondary method.
Why is it effective?
This method is effective as it allows you to gather information in concise and informative bits that are important to you and that you will find useful for your project. The reflection will help you understand why you chose that certain information and what you will use it for, for example, how it is helpful for you.
What are the limitations?
Some of the limitations of this method are that it can sometimes look unprofessional and messy. They may also not provide enough information to extensively explain an idea.
Surveys
What is it?
To the left is an example of a survey, where you ask a list of different questions based on what you need data for, which we made for the FMP and will be one of the methods I use. This is mainly a primary form of research.
Why is it effective?
This method is effective as it allows you to gain a lot of information quickly and from a wide variety of people. It also allows people to answer anonymously. A survey, especially an online one, can reach people quickly and also saves on costs, as there are many free websites that allow you to create them.
What are the limitations?
Some limitations of this method are that people can leave questions unanswered, giving you no data at all. Also, some people may interpret the questions incorrectly, which may lead to inaccurate feedback and inefficient feedback. People may also read the questions incorrectly, which can lead to the same effect as misinterpreting the questions.
Focus groups
What is it?
To the left is an example of a focus group. This is a method I will use in my research, where people share their thoughts and experiences with a certain topic. This is mainly a primary method of research.
Why is it effective?
This method is effective as it can provide different opinions, views, and perspectives on something that you may have missed. It can help improve your idea and generate new ideas by bouncing them off the group to see what they think.
What are the limitations?
Some of the limitations are that if not performed with good organization and efficiency, it can take a lot of time. There is also the human factor to consider, as people could lie or not feel comfortable voicing their real opinions.
Reflection on research methods:
Overall, the research I conducted on some of the main research methods I will be using was successful. It not only helped me understand how to make them effectively and lay out these methods, but also what they are and how they are effective. This helps me understand how these methods will be helpful for my project. This research also helped me learn the limitations and advantages of each of them, teaching me that a lot of different methods need to be used to gather effective, useful, and fair information that covers a wide range of areas and is also of good quality and usefulness for my needs.
