My specs for this assignment were as follows:
- features two characters of different genders
- communicates Cognition, Behavior, and Affect of each character through subtext
- primarily dialogue (use as little scene description as possible)
- no character speaks more than twice in a row
- no line exceeds 100 characters in length
- no more than 6 pages including cover page
You can view a short reflection just below this second draft:
I'm still not satisfied with Lin's portrayal in this piece. They come off as passive, and appear to only be there to be bounced off of by Rida. I think what this piece needs is a moment in the destroyed village where Lin can reveal their softer, more empathetic side, so they can come off as less of a heel and more of a proper lancer to Rida.
I could use Iffeo to show Lin's emapthy, as Lin cares about Iffeo a great deal. By humanizing Lin in this way, Lin would have a moment to shine distinct from Rida, and the audience could recognize each member of the duo as independent and complementary.
Despite having this trajectory, actually implementing this change is difficult. This is because, according to the spec, I am right at the page limit. So adding more to the script is not an option without first cutting something.
Good candidates to be cut are always hard to find, but I think I could trim on pages 4 and 5, and change the tone of Rida and Lin's argument to place Lin in a more dynamic and active role.
By making Lin more active and complex, Rida and Lin's dialogue will be more dynamic and showcase more of the interesting character traits each has in contrast of each other.
So by cutting material and diversifying Lin's representation, I can make this script stronger in a third draft.
